How Nevada Legislation Targets Wildfire Impacts

In 2025 wildfires burned 5.1 million acres across the country. Over the past decade fires have averaged more than 7 million acres burned each year while suppression costs have averaged $3.4 billion annually. Alaska led the nation with 1,006,158 acres burned, followed by California at 505,994 acres and Arizona at 326,813 acres.

Nevada was among the Western states that experienced multiple wildfires larger than 40,000 acres last year. Because so much of the state is federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management, wildfires create direct pressure on state budgets, range rehabilitation, sage-grouse habitat, ranching and rural insurance markets. Nevada policymakers and the state’s congressional delegation regularly face questions of federal cost-sharing, land-management practices and post-fire recovery funding after intense seasons.

Recent state legislation has responded to these pressures. Senate Bill 499 (2025) created the Out-of-State Fire Suppression Account, appropriated more than $27 million and authorized temporary General Fund advances for delayed reimbursements. Assembly Bill 376 (effective January 1, 2026) allows insurers to exclude wildfire coverage from standard homeowners policies. Senate Bill 260 requires rules protecting workers from wildfire smoke, while Senate Bill 25 and Assembly Bill 57 clarified the roles of the State Forester Firewarden and Fire Marshal in wildfire response and mutual aid. Together these measures strengthen funding stability, insurance availability, worker safety and coordinated capacity.

Even with these steps, wildfires continue to impose heavy costs on states and cities through suppression expenses, damaged infrastructure, lost tax revenue and rising insurance pressures. When large fires ignite, personnel, equipment and funding are rapidly pooled and redirected to the incident, stretching local and state resources thin and delaying other public services until the emergency ends.
