Nevada outpaces the nation in job growth as unemployment drops to a one-year low
Nevada added more than 4,000 jobs for a second straight month in August, gaining 4,400 and lifting nonfarm employment to 1,619,400. Nevada’s job increase over the past year ranks fifth best in the country. Unemployment fell to 4.8%, the lowest in a year, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported.
Nevada’s job growth rate beats California and Florida. New York lost the most jobs, at 23,500. Maryland lost 8,200, and Massachusetts lost 7,100. Texas added the most jobs in the nation, about 159,400.
Leisure and hospitality led August with 3,100 jobs, and professional and business services added 1,000. Private employers added 3,400 jobs, or 0.2%, and 20,600 over the year. Payrolls have risen in 10 of the past 12 months.
Las Vegas added 7,000 jobs, up 0.6% for the month and 14,200, or 1.2%, over the year. Reno-Sparks added 1,100, up 0.4% for the month and 2,800, or 1.0%, over the year.
Statewide, Nevada added 20,700 jobs over the past year, a 1.3% gain and more than three times the national rate of 0.4%.
Nevada tech jobs are projected to keep growing in 2026 at the fastest rate of any state, more than double the 1.9% national forecast.
